Financial Aid: Teaching assistantships are the predominant form of financial aid in the Nonfiction Writing Program; a ¼-time or more appointment qualifies a TA for resident tuition. Research assistantships are periodically available with the Iowa Review or Philological Quarterly; a ¼-time or more RA qualifies for resident tuition. Iowa Arts Tuition Scholarships (IATS’s) are supplements offered to 6 students each year to cover 2 years of tuition expenses; these are usually the first 6 students for whom a TA or RA appointment is secured. Graduate Merit Fellowships (GMF’s) are 2-year awards from the Graduate College given to a small number of highly talented applicants from underrepresented populations; they cover tuition and fees and offer a stipend similar to that of a half-time TA. Usually a GMF-holder is offered an appointment as an RA or TA in the 2nd or 3rd year so that he or she may receive maximum support throughout the program. Stipend values are not specified.

Financial Aid: A note on my long summary of IWW financial aid: chances are you’ll get it, but it’s only partial and you will have to work for it. Here’s what it says on the program website. Normally, financial assistance is available for all students enrolled in the program. Any out-of-state student awarded at least a ¼-time appointment automatically has tuition reduced to the resident rate. Students awarded at least a ¼-time appointment will also receive tuition scholarships of $1 487.50 per semester from the Graduate College. In 2006-07, Graduate Teaching Assistantships carried the following stipends: $10 794 for 1/3-time assistants (2 sections per year); $16 191 for ½-time assistants (3 sections per year). A limited number of these appointments are available. In 2006-07, Graduate Research Assistantships were $7 993 for ¼-time assistants (10 hours/week). A number of 1- and 2-year non-teaching stipends are available to incoming students (in the form of 4 fellowships; their names are listed on the program website but their values are not specified; there are also 2 fellowships for program graduates whose values are not specified). Teaching-Writing Fellowships are awarded to 2nd-year students and carry a stipend of $16.5 K; they require the teaching of a creative writing course offered to undergraduates—very few of these fellowships are available.
