Utah
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
Subject areas: Fiction, Poetry
Faculty: Karen Brennan, Francois Camoin, Katherine Coles, Jacqueline Osherow, Paisley Rekdal, Donald Revell, Melanie Rae Thon
Length: Full-time graduate students take at least 9 credits per semester; degree is 33 credits. At this rate, it should take 3.67 (or 4) semesters.
Tuition per year: Easier to go by credit. You take 9 courses at 3 credits each, plus a 6-credit thesis. Hence, the 33-credit program. If a resident took 9 credits in her first 3 semesters, she’d be charged $1 604.05 for each 9-credit semester; in her 4th semester, when she does her thesis, she’d be charged $1 210.63 for that 6-credit semester. Her total tuition cost would be $6 022.78. If a non-resident did the same, he’d be charged $5 663.67 for each of his first 3 semesters (9 credits each), plus $4 278.90 for his 4th semester (of 6 credits). His total tuition cost would be $21 269.91.
Application requirements: Submit Application for Graduate Admission, $45 application fee, and transcript to Graduate School; submit English Department Graduate Application Form, 3 recommendations, GRE scores, photocopy of transcript, statement of purpose, critical writing sample, and creative writing sample to English Department
Deadline: It’s complicated for this one. For materials submitted to the English Department: 15 Dec. if interested in admission for the following fall with teaching assistantship; 15 Apr. if interested only in admission for the following fall; 15 Oct. if interested only in admission for the following spring (as you can see, teaching assistants are only hired in the fall). For materials submitted to the Graduate School: 1 month prior to the appropriate deadline in the English Department, so that the English Department receives them on time after they are processed by the Graduate School.
Financial Aid: Teaching assistants receive an annual stipend of approximately $9.5 K plus a waiver of resident or non-resident tuition. The university subsidizes 80% of a standard health insurance premium for full-time teaching assistants.
